Yet what can satire, either grave or gay?. . .
What vice has it subdued? whose heart reclaim’ed
By rigour? or whom laughed into reform?
Alas! Leviathan is not so tamed.

    – William Cowper, quoted in Number 11

According to the Buddha’s teaching of dependent arising, nothing — not even an atom or a particle — exists as a thing unto itself, but everything depends on everything.

So if that teaching, known for short as emptiness, is true, then the answer to Cowper’s question is that satire has the power to change everything.

And so his conclusion about Leviathan might be too pessimistic, or too nihilistic.
